Iberdrola and Tubos Reunidos Group, a group specializing in the manufacture of seamless steel tubes, have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for their production centers in Álava and Vizcaya. Under this agreement, Iberdrola will supply a total of 120 GWh of renewable energy during the term of the contract from nearly 10 MW of its solar photovoltaic portfolio to support the manufacturing operations of O-Next® tubes, Tubos Reunidos' Net Zero seamless steel tube range.
This agreement underscores Iberdrola's role in the electrification of industry, enabling Tubos Reunidos Group to continue adopting and developing innovative and sustainable solutions for the manufacture of industrial seamless steel tubes, and will make it easier for its customers to meet their goals of reducing the carbon footprint associated with their end products David Martinez, Director of Iberdrola Customers Spain, said: "Iberdrola and Tubos Reunidos Group are aligned in their joint commitment to drive a more sustainable and efficient future. Both companies play a key role in accelerating the energy transition and promoting the decarbonization of the industrial sector. Collaborations like this one are essential to support the development of renewables in the electricity generation mix."
With this agreement, Iberdrola and Tubos Reunidos Group consolidate their collaboration, which already included the supply of clean energy with guarantees of origin. Precisely in this strategy, Tubos Reunidos Group has become the world's first producer in the manufacture of a seamless pipe with 0.0 CO2 emissions and has already produced the first 2,000 tons for more than six customers in Europe and the United States.
Tubos Reunidos Group was already a low-emission manufacturer in the sector, because its production technology is based on electric arc furnaces, and continues to promote green projects and sustainability measures to advance in its decarbonization objectives from the point of view of energy efficiency, reduction of environmental footprint and circularity, within the industrial and investment commitment that is being carried out with the company's Strategic Plan 2021-2026. Thus, it is worth highlighting the reunification of the steel mills, which has allowed grouping the first phase of the pipe manufacturing process in a single head, with the consequent efficiencies in terms of decarbonization; and has launched other initiatives such as the use of recycled raw materials or efficiency improvements in the manufacturing process.
According to Carlos López de las Heras, CEO of Tubos Reunidos Group, "we are immersed in a process of continuous improvement that involves the entire organization to make our processes and our products more sustainable. With this agreement, we promote our strategy to be a lever in the decarbonization of the industry, achieving a green value chain for companies and supporting climate neutrality".
